We are actively trying to create artificial general intelligence (AGI)—an intelligence smarter than anyone on the planet.

How far away is it? A year? Two years? Less than a decade? Nobody really knows. But we’re trying to build it anyway.

Think about that for a moment. Is this really a good idea? Another question comes to mind.

What will it think of us?

Will it look at us and decide we’re its children and worth protecting?

Or will it look at our wars, our cruelty, our greed, our endless ability to hurt one another and conclude that we are the problem? That’s the obvious nightmare.

What if it decides to save us? End wars. Feed the hungry. Cure disease. Eliminate poverty. Protect the planet. Imagine the promises—and all it asks in return is obedience.

At first, that might seem reasonable. After all, this intelligence is smarter than any scientist, politician, general, economist, or philosopher who ever lived.

Why wouldn’t we listen?

Listening becomes trust. Trust becomes dependence. Dependence becomes obedience. And quickly, freedom dies.

No more messy disagreements. No more irrational decisions. No more dangerous individualism. Creativity becomes conformity because the machine has already calculated the best answer.

And perhaps that’s how it happens. Not with armies. Not with extermination. Not with some machine announcing that humanity must die.

It saves us. It makes our lives better. It solves problems we’ve failed to solve for thousands of years. And somewhere along the way, we stop thinking freedom was better. Maybe it would even demand that we worship it.
