“And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.”
— Jude 1:6 (NIV)
Some verses in the Bible feel like echoes of a buried truth—half-revealed, half-restrained. Jude 1:6 is one of them.
It speaks of angels who rebelled—not in a vague, philosophical way, but physically. Tangibly. These weren’t just ideas gone rogue. These were entities. Beings. And whatever they did, it was so disruptive that God didn’t just cast them out… He chained them in darkness.
But where? And why?
The Crime: What Did These Angels Do?
The traditional view links Jude 1:6 with Genesis 6:1–4, where “sons of God” took human women and fathered the Nephilim. Giants. Abominations. If that’s true, then these angels didn’t just rebel—they tampered with human bloodlines, crossing a line that heaven couldn’t ignore.
In The Book of Enoch, a non-canonical but widely referenced text, these Watchers also taught humanity war, sorcery, and forbidden sciences. They accelerated our knowledge, not to uplift, but to corrupt. Sound familiar?
The Prison: Where Are They Now?
Jude says they’re “bound in everlasting chains… in darkness.” Peter adds another layer: they were cast into Tartarus—a word used only once in the New Testament. It’s not just “hell.” It’s below hell. A kind of cosmic quarantine for entities that broke reality.
Speculatively? That prison could be:
- A spiritual dimension—folded away, unreachable by physical means.
- Beneath the Earth—locked in ancient strata, maybe beneath sacred mountains.
- Or, if you really want to reach… beneath facilities we’ve forgotten how to question.
Fiction or Pattern Recognition?
In my novel The Forbidden Strain, I don’t write about angels. Not directly. But I do write about a lab beneath tribal land, where science has been pushed past moral limits. Where DNA is altered. Children are born of unknown origin. And where something chained may not stay chained forever.
Do I think Tartarus is under New Mexico? Probably not.
But ask yourself:
Why do so many ancient traditions talk about beings locked away beneath us?
Why do those myths mirror what we’re now doing with CRISPR (a revolutionary gene-editing technology), synthetic embryos, and neural AI?
Jude 1:6 doesn’t just point back to a rebellion.
It warns of a judgment still pending.
A reckoning waiting in the dark.
And maybe—just maybe—someone is trying to pick the lock.
